Middlebury College Library

With a history spanning across more than two centuries, Middlebury College is a unique institution, among the most highly regarded liberal arts colleges, with a reach extending from our main campus in Vermont's Champlain Valley to specialized and graduate programs located around the world.

Special Collections and Archives at the Middlebury College Library serves as a research laboratory for both the Middlebury community and independent scholars.  We welcome researchers to explore our collections of rare books, archives, manuscripts, photographs, audio and video recordings, and other rare and unique materials that tell the story of our collective past.

Our collections are broad in scope and cover a variety of media and realia.  As part of our firm commitment to open research and scholarship, we are dedicated to sharing digitized and born-digital archival materials in our collections to whatever extent practicable, and are excited to present these items from our collections via the Internet Archive.

Luckily, 16 mm film, common from the 1920s through the 1960s, is relatively durable stuff. This particular reel of film, which sat in the Middlebury College archives for over forty years, depicts Robert Frost for two glorious, full color minutes. For the first time in nearly half a century (thanks to a film preservation lab in Philadelphia), watch as Frost harvests vegetables from his garden at his Ripton, Vermont cabin (down the road from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference), frolics with his...

Middlebury College in the seventies was certainly, as the title suggests, a place to grow. Students grew not just fantastic mustaches and sideburns – they germinated ideas, developed relationships with faculty, and burgeoned into inspiring leaders who have transformed the world into a better place. Filmed in 1976, this twenty minute documentary depicts Middlebury through the lens of five students: a literature major, a geology student, political science majors, and a French major. The English...

This 16mm clip shows a group of Midd undergrads braving wind and snow on a snowshoeing trek in the 1930s. The Mountain Club arranged many such outings in the '30s to summit Worth mountain near Bread Loaf and get a view of Lake Pleiad before heading back down to the lodge for hot dogs and cocoa. For more information or permission to use this clip, please contact Special Collections and Archives, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT at specialcollections@middlebury.edu This is a clip from original...

In this clip from the early 1940s, a group of Middlebury students hike out to the college's own sugaring camp in an orchard near the Bread Loaf Inn. With the help of "Sugarman" Boudreau, they collect sap, process it in the sugarhouse to make syrup, then enjoy the results on snow, with pickles and doughnuts. The Middlebury Mountain Club sponsored the event each April and photographs from the 1939 outing even made it onto the pages of Life Magazine. For more information or permission to...

This clip from a 16mm reel in the College archives shows student skiers climbing over hurdles and sliding through barrels in the 1920s when Middlebury's Winter Carnival events lineup included ski and snowshoe obstacle course races. The course ran from the top of the hill where Stewart Hall now stands down to the rear of McCullough Gymnasium. In a Campus retrospective written in 1951, Samuel Guarnaccia '30 remembered the events fondly, saying that when "Beer Belly" Wilson tried to...

We were surprised to find this film of the 1938 flood in East Middlebury, Vermont in the College Archives. The fact that College film-makers ventured off campus indicates what an incredible disaster the flood was. This footage is one of many undated and unlabeled film clips recently discovered in the Archives. Although it's possible that some of these scenes were shot elsewhere, several of the buildings caught on film are still standing in East Middlebury. Based on the vintage of the cars, we...

Today, when we look back at this film from the middle of the last century, we think life looks quite formal. But for the students and faculty going about their daily lives at that time, it was perfectly natural, even expected, for Middlebury women to wear dresses and hats, and for Middlebury's men to don suits and ties. The start of the film clip features a dinner party at The Homestead, located on Weybridge Street. Clara B. Knapp, Professor of Home Economics, is seated at the head of the...
